Message from the PYP Coordinator: What is the G5 PYP Exhibition?

Picture
The PYP exhibition serves as a culminating, collaborative inquiry where students engage in meaningful exploration and demonstrate agency and responsibility in their learning. The PYP exhibition takes place in Grade 5, which encompasses student learning throughout the entire Primary Years Programme.  During the PYP exhibition, students explore and present their understanding of a topic or issue they are passionate about, allowing them to investigate an area of interest in depth, share their findings, and show what they’ve learned in a meaningful way. The exhibition gives students a chance to demonstrate key skills and qualities they've developed throughout the primary years, such as being open-minded, caring, and reflective. It encourages them to look at their topic from different angles and bring together everything they’ve learned in a meaningful way. Through the exhibition, students document and present their learning process, take action based on their discoveries, and reflect on their journey within the PYP framework. It is also a unifying experience that brings together students, teachers, and the wider learning community, celebrating students’ growth and preparing them for the next stage in their educational journey.

Lessons on Cyberbullying in PS

Read Now

Last week, Ms. Heather, the PS Counselor taught Cyberbullying lessons in G1-5 along with Mr. Carlos and Ms. Amanda in the STEM lab.  Talking about Cyberbullying and bullying throughout the school year is so important to be proactive and also to give children strategies if they think they have been the target of a bully.  The classes also talked about the importance of being an Upstander for either yourself or someone else and immediately reporting to a trusted adult if someone says something that makes you feel sad and/or uncomfortable online.

Another important acronym that the students learned was:
  • S - Step away.
  • T - Tell a trusted adult.
  • O -  OK sites first  (that your parents know about).
  • P - Pause and think online.

We also talked about the importance of taking a screenshot and not deleting the offensive comment so it can be immediately reported.

Another important thing that Ms Heather has been doing along with Ms. Eloïse, is co-facilitating  “Wellness Retreats” for G1-G5.  The first retreat focused on the importance of being first kind to yourself before you can be kind to other people.  Learners had the chance to choose from practicing Mindful breathing, Mandala coloring or reading a book on the topic or practicing yoga with Ms. Eloïse.

We encourage you to practice any form of
Mindfulness at home and talk about what Well-Being means to your family.

Message from the PYP Coordinator about our Teacher action behind the scenes

Read Now

Have you ever wondered what teachers are doing behind the scenes while also teaching every day? Here are some things that teachers spend time doing:
Picture

  • Collaborative Planning: Throughout the week teachers are planning engaging learning activities for the students.  They work alongside the SSTs, Integrationists, and as a grade level team.  Teachers are working on building a transdisciplinary approach and having students build connections across the disciplines. Teaching teams also have a collaborative planning session with the PYP Coordinator.

  • Retreats: Prior to a new unit beginning, teachers come together with myself to discuss the elements of the upcoming units.  Teachers use feedback collected by previous students and teachers and current student input to guide the new unit.  Within these planning retreats teachers use the AERO standards, PYP scope and Sequence to determine the learning outcomes for the unit.  These learning outcomes are also the ones that will be reflected through our reporting.

  • Data informed instruction: Teachers are continuously collecting formative data that is used to create groups and inform instruction.  Teachers use this to reteach instruction, extend instruction, and work towards meeting all the students' needs.

I hope that this gave you a little insight to all that teachers are doing to prepare for each day.

Students only came to school for two days, but teachers and teaching assistants have been very busy collaborating, learning, creating and sharing amazing ideas. I am excited to celebrate our amazing teaching team in this week’s bulletin, showing how much they do every day, not just in class, but also out of class, after school hours, to continuously help AISM grow. I find their dedication impressive and inspiring and invite you to join me in celebrating them today.

As grade 5 learners are inquiring into peace and conflict and inspirational humans, we welcomed Shelly Pollock, co-author of award winning picture book, Lion Lights. This inspirational book has received four different children’s book awards including the 2023 Children’s Africana Book Award (CABA),  the Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2022, California Eureka Silver Honoree 2022, and the 2022 Blueberry Award! Mrs. Pollock shares the incredible story of Richard Turer, a Kenyan Maasai who grew up trying to protect his family's cattle from the lions. Through hard work and perseverance, he designed and discovered a peaceful solution of flashing lights to scare the lions away without hurting them and protecting the cattle. As Shelly shared her writing journey she was able to encourage grade fives to take action and find sustainable solutions.
