As Sascha's tenure at AISM comes to a close, the Board of Directors would like to thank him for his leadership of our school over the last three years. He has made many positive and lasting contributions, and AISM is a better school because of his vision and motivation. We are especially grateful for his unrelenting work and leadership over the last few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which time he and the entire team transformed our school into an online community in which students continued to flourish. We wish him the very best at his next school in Mexico, and remind him that "Once a buffalo, always a buffalo!"

Thank you to all who attended the virtual Board meeting on June 25. During this meeting, which was co-chaired by our new school director Jim Laney, the Board elected new officers for the 2020/2021 school year, received a report from the Administration on enrollment figures, and discussed the board vacancy. Current enrollment figures for the next school year were at 346 committed students as of June 25, however, there are a number of organizations still finalizing decisions on whether and when children will return to Maputo. The administration shared data on enrollment figures per grade level, which they are using along with course selections in secondary school to make faculty decisions for the first quarter. The administration expects that enrollment will continue to grow throughout the school year, and will recall faculty on sabbatical on a quarterly basis.

During the executive session, the board discussed the board vacancy, early learning and special services programming, and a possible virtual leadership workshop early next school year. Regarding the board vacancy created by Matt Droz's children not returning to AISM next year during the second year of his term, the board proposed to grant him membership to the Association as permitted by the Articles of Association, which would allow him to complete his term. The board feels that experience and continuity will be critical in the year ahead, and values Matt's extensive contributions and insights. However, given the expression of interest from other members of the community during the meeting, on Matt's suggestion we are seeking self-nominations from members of the association. The board will then consider all candidates, including Matt Droz. Please submit your statement of interest in filling this one year term, including your particular areas of expertise that could benefit the board. Please also indicate if you will be willing to run in the general election in the spring of 2021 in order to fill a two year position from 2021 - 2023. All interested candidates should submit their statements of interest to board@aism-moz.com by 5:00 p.m. Maputo time, Friday, July 3.
