Academic Performance at AISM
At AISM (American International School of Mozambique), every learner follows a pathway that is uniquely their own. Guided by the International Baccalaureate continuum and an inquiry-driven approach, we design learning experiences that respond to each student’s strengths, interests, and aspirations. Through personalised support, differentiated instruction, and close teacher guidance, students are empowered to progress at the right pace and in the right direction for them. Beyond academic achievement, AISM cultivates critical thinking, creativity, resilience, and global mindedness—preparing every student not just for examinations, but for purposeful participation and success in a complex, interconnected world.
Results
AISM Class of 2025
We are delighted to announce that AISM’s IB Diploma Programme students achieved a 100% pass rate in the May 2025 IB Diploma examination session, including seven Portuguese/English Bilingual Diplomas. They earned a 100% subject pass rate across a broad mix of disciplines, including Studies A Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, History, Psychology, Economics, Environmental Systems and Societies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Visual Arts, and the IB Core.
Their achievement surpasses the world average, indicating the unwavering dedication of our students, the passion and expertise of our faculty, and the support of our entire school community. We celebrate not only the results but also the journey, marked by resilience, perseverance, integrity, and global-mindedness, especially in a school year as challenging as 2024-2025, shaped by numerous political and economic disruptions in Mozambique and around the world.
Congratulations to the students, parents, and the whole AISM community. A huge shout-out to our dedicated teachers for the guidance and care they provided. Here’s to many more milestones ahead!- How AISM Uses MAP to Monitor Student Progress
At AISM, we use the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment to better understand how each student is learning and growing over time. MAP helps us see both a student’s current level of achievement and the progress they are making along their individual learning pathway.
When teachers review MAP results, they look at two key pieces of information:- Achievement – how a student is performing at a particular point in time
- Growth – how much progress a student is making from one test period to the next
Understanding MAP Results
MAP places students into one of five performance ranges: Low, Low Average, Average, High Average, and High. Students in the High Average and High ranges are performing above the 60th percentile, meaning they scored higher than at least 60% of students in the comparison group.
If a student’s growth is not typical, MAP data is reviewed alongside other information such as classroom work, teacher observations, and ongoing assessments. This helps us build a fuller picture of how a student is learning and what support or challenge may be needed next. Our goal is to ensure every student is mastering essential skills while continuing to grow and stretch academically.
What Is MAP?
MAP is a computer-based, adaptive assessment used widely in international and US schools. It measures achievement and growth in reading, mathematics, language usage, and science and is developed by NWEA, a US-based educational organisation.
Because MAP is adaptive, the questions adjust in difficulty based on a student’s responses. This allows the test to accurately identify each student’s learning level. Students receive a RIT score, which shows where they are in their learning and helps teachers plan next steps.
When MAP Is Administered
At AISM, students complete MAP assessments twice each school year:- Early in the year, to establish a starting point
- Later in the year, to measure growth and progress
How MAP Fits with Learning at AISM
MAP is aligned with the same academic standards used in AISM classrooms, including AERO Common Core Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. This ensures consistency between what students are taught and what is assessed.
MAP is a norm-referenced assessment, meaning student results are compared with those of other students of the same age or grade level. AISM uses both US national norms and international school norms to provide meaningful comparisons. Importantly, AISM includes all students in its MAP data, including those with learning differences or developing English proficiency, giving a more complete and inclusive picture of our school community.
Using MAP Data to Support Students
MAP data is used thoughtfully at multiple levels:- Micro level:: Teachers use individual results to personalise instruction
- Meso level: Teaching teams review grade-level trends to adjust planning and support
- Macro level: School leadership uses overall data to guide curriculum development and professional learning
Through this approach, MAP supports our commitment to understanding each learner, responding to their needs, and helping every student continue to grow throughout their AISM journey. - Coming soon!
