Welcome - bem-vindo - to AISM and the Buffalo Herd!

I am excited to introduce you to the American International School of Mozambique. Situated on a beautiful, 10-acre, purpose-built campus a few hundred meters from the shores of the Indian Ocean, AISM offers the most robust academic and extracurricular programs of any school in Mozambique. Tomorrow's diplomatic, business, educational, and scientific leaders are enrolled in our school today.

With more than 70 nationalities in our tight-knit community, which we affectionately call The Herd, AISM is a place where cultures converge and diversity thrives. Our highly-qualified multinational faculty provides a world-class International Baccalaureate education in service of our mission to pursue excellence by empowering learners to achieve mastery of self, advance their communities, and flourish in an ever-changing world. Governance

AISM is an independent nonprofit school governed by a seven-member board of directors. Among these members, six are elected by the AISM Association, and one is appointed as the representative of the U.S. Embassy. All parents and guardians of children attending AISM are automatically members of the Association.

The responsibilities of AISM's board include:

Exercising full control over the operations of the Association and the School.
Upholding the School's mission.
Legally representing the School.
Appointing the school director.
Approving tuition, budgets, and policies.
Providing reports to the Association.
Deliberating, communicating, and ensuring that AISM advances toward its strategic goals in support of the School's Mission.

In terms of finances, AISM is a nonprofit institution, meaning that every dollar received is reinvested in the school. These funds are used to maintain a high-quality education for our students, which includes attracting and retaining highly qualified faculty, staff, and administration, investing in quality instructional resources like equipment and technology, and maintaining, remodeling, or expanding our facilities.

Our tuition fees are comparable to those of international schools in Southern Africa. AISM offers an exceptional educational experience in Maputo, including comprehensive programs and services, recognition as an IB World School (offering PYP, MYP, and DP), facilities, and a highly qualified faculty, making it a leader among schools in Maputo.

Board of Directors

Our board of directors are voluntary members who receive no financial compensation for their commitment of time and effort—as a non-owned, non-profit entity, there are no owners, investors, or shareholders to which a return is paid.

Child Protection

Ensuring the safety and protection of children is a top priority for every adult, parent, and student within the AISM community. We are committed to the following actions:

Education and Awareness: AISM will provide education and information to all stakeholders regarding their right to safety and how they can promote respect within the community.
Safe Recruitment: AISM will employ secure and compliant recruitment and hiring methods that align with child protection policies. This includes the requirement for up-to-date, verified police record checks and confidential references.
Continuous Training and Review: AISM will regularly assess, train, and review safe practices related to personal responsibility and the reporting structure for all employees.
Investigation and Reporting: AISM will uphold rigorous investigative and reporting procedures whenever concerns or issues related to child protection are raised.
