Welcome to AISM

Welcome - bem-vindo - to AISM and the Buffalo Herd!

I am excited to introduce you to the American International School of Mozambique. Situated on a beautiful, 10-acre, purpose-built campus a few hundred meters from the shores of the Indian Ocean, AISM offers the most robust academic and extracurricular programs of any school in Mozambique. Tomorrow's diplomatic, business, educational, and scientific leaders are enrolled in our school today.

With more than 70 nationalities in our tight-knit community, which we affectionately call The Herd, AISM is a place where cultures converge and diversity thrives. Our highly-qualified multinational faculty provides a world-class International Baccalaureate education in service of our mission to pursue excellence by empowering learners to achieve mastery of self, advance their communities, and flourish in an ever-changing world. Woven throughout our program are our core values to: Celebrate Humanity, Cultivate Grit, Inspire Curiosity, and Embody Integrity.

Committed to continuous improvement, we have selected three strategic priorities to guide our work:
  • AISM will implement educational practices and technologies that challenge and enable all students to fulfill their academic potential.
  • AISM will integrate effective social-emotional learning and support to enhance student well-being.
  • AISM will cultivate opportunities for students to collaborate with diverse communities in Mozambique to create positive outcomes.
In short, our priorities are to ensure that we have school programs that are CHALLENGING, CARING, and CONNECTED!

I sincerely hope that you will linger on the website for a while and learn more about our school. The written information and videos paint a picture of the AISM experience, often as told by the students themselves. I think you will be impressed. Better still, please contact our Admissions team ([email protected]) to arrange a campus tour.  We are very proud of our school and would love to show you around.

Sincerely,

  • Governance

AISM is an independent nonprofit school governed by a seven-member board of directors. Among these members, six are elected by the AISM Association, and one is appointed as the representative of the U.S. Embassy. All parents and guardians of children attending AISM are automatically members of the Association.

The responsibilities of AISM's board include:
    • Exercising full control over the operations of the Association and the School.
    • Upholding the School's mission.
    • Legally representing the School.
    • Appointing the school director.
    • Approving tuition, budgets, and policies.
    • Providing reports to the Association.
    • Deliberating, communicating, and ensuring that AISM advances toward its strategic goals in support of the School's Mission.
In terms of finances, AISM is a nonprofit institution, meaning that every dollar received is reinvested in the school. These funds are used to maintain a high-quality education for our students, which includes attracting and retaining highly qualified faculty, staff, and administration, investing in quality instructional resources like equipment and technology, and maintaining, remodeling, or expanding our facilities.

Our tuition fees are comparable to those of international schools in Southern Africa. AISM offers an exceptional educational experience in Maputo, including comprehensive programs and services, recognition as an IB World School (offering PYP, MYP, and DP), facilities, and a highly qualified faculty, making it a leader among schools in Maputo.

  • School Profile

    AISM Today
Over the past 33 years, the American International School of Mozambique (AISM) has experienced significant growth. Today, the school boasts a diverse student body of over 515 students hailing from more than 70 different countries. They are guided and supported by a dedicated team of over 90 professional teachers and staff members.

Established in 1990, AISM is an IB World School that offers a comprehensive US-style college preparatory program spanning from Early Learning Center (ELC) through grade 12. AISM thrives as a collaborative partnership involving motivated students, committed parents, and highly qualified staff members. Together, they cultivate an educational environment designed to inspire students to develop their unique talents and perspectives. The curriculum at AISM provides students with a well-rounded and stimulating educational experience that emphasizes excellence, ethical principles, and active engagement in learning.

AISM holds recognition and support from the US State Department Office of Overseas Schools and holds accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Additionally, the school is authorized to offer the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Instruction is conducted primarily in English, and the school follows a standard northern hemisphere academic calendar, commencing classes in mid-August and concluding in mid-June.

The curriculum at AISM is focused on the requirements and philosophical tenets of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for Grades 11-12 and the MYP and PYP for ELC-10.

It is our policy not to rank students. Our classes are small, our program highly rigorous, our range of grades narrow, and our students almost without exception enter competitive four-year universities.

    Before & After School Activities
We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities for our students, both before and after school. These activities include Model United Nations, photography, investigative science, sign language, African dance, debate club, computer programming, track & field, volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming, band, choir, guitar club, chess, crochet, clay and pottery club, art, outdoor investigation club, and arts and crafts.
