We had a decent turn-out at the DigCit Parent Session on Tuesday morning with 21 primary and secondary parents attending - some great initial discussions!
This was the first of several sessions where our focus was to share tech challenges and successes, AISM's approach to Digital Citizenship, the importance of home/school partnerships especially in this area & sharing parent-friendly practical suggestions and resources. One of the main aims was to involve parents in deciding other possible foci for future sessions.
This truly is an area where community involvement - students, teachers and parents - is needed in order for us to navigate successfully! Here are the resources, presentation and handouts that we included - looking forward to sharing further in future sessions - more information to come!
Parent Handouts: Be the Parent
Saturday represented a day of celebration, with the focus being diversity and multiculturalism as mentioned in the Message from the Director. We highly encourage you to read more about the International Day event over on our AISM Magazine, through the beautiful words of our student journalist, Laia. Check out the visual round up of the event on Instagram and/or Youtube.
The AISM 76ers
“Maybe it’s something we take for granted in our Maputo day-to-day, but this international life really is something to celebrate and we did it in style on International Day 2023.
This past Saturday, our community got together to celebrate each and every one of the 76 different countries that make up the school's family in our annual International Day. Not only does AISM have students, teachers and parents from almost 80 countries, but also from 6 out of the 7 continents on the planet, making for an extremely diverse day of celebration.“
Please join the rest of the AISM community for a variety of activities including football/soccer, basketball, volleyball and yoga. Remember that the swimming pool and library are also open for community use on Saturdays too! See poster below for more information:
*Please contact Adrian (843077560) if you wish to join the WhatsApp group for the activities.
At AISM, we employ the RULER Approach, developed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, to guide our teaching and learning in Advisory classes. Additionally, we adhere to the SHAPE standards to guide instruction on essential topics such as Puberty and Adolescent Sexual Development, Gender Identity & Expression, Sexual Orientation & Identity, Sexual Health, Consent & Healthy Relationships, and Interpersonal Violence. Click here for the Middle School and High School RULER Unit Overviews.
Advisory is a regularly scheduled class within our Secondary School, aimed at facilitating regular meetings for small groups of students. These sessions foster relationships beyond the academic realm and provide a platform for learning directly related to their well-being. Advisors, who are responsible for planning and facilitating these classes, collaborate with the Social Emotional Counselor to offer targeted workshops on health and well-being topics. Advisory is a weekly fixture in all Secondary School grades, spanning from Grades 6 to 12.
We are a Google School with Apple TV's and projectors in each learning space. We have STEM Labs, a variety of coding and programming platforms and many databases and electronic resources across the school. We see devices as a tool, just as we see pens, pencils, notebooks and textbooks and, in this way, only use when it benefits the learning.
Devices used at AISM
Learners from ELC to Grade 6 use school-issued iPads while our Grade 7-12 learners must bring their own device (BYOD) to school. All information related to this may be found here. Electronics tend to be expensive in Maputo and selection is more limited, so we recommend that you purchase and bring devices ahead of time.
AISM Email Accounts
All students are assigned AISM email accounts. These are used for registration to various learning tools. Email addresses at AISM follow a general pattern: [email protected].
Platforms at AISM
Most Primary School teachers will communicate with learners via Google Classroom and most Secondary School teachers will communicate with learners through Managebac and Google Classroom.
Schools are often guilty of using too many systems - and here at AISM, we are no different! In an attempt to change this, here are the three main systems that we use at AISM.
AISM processes personal data on its prospective, current and former students and their parents or legal representatives, as part of its everyday operations of providing educational services. For more information, read our Data Privacy Notice. Also access AISM's Device Acceptable Use Guidelines
A big thank you to those parents that attended the RULER Family Connections Workshop. We focused on the fourth RULER tool, “The Blueprint”.
If you were unable to attend the RULER workshop but you are curious about the BLUEPRINT and how it can be helpful at home, we have included the informational slides from the session as well as a few other resources:
