As grade 5 learners are inquiring into peace and conflict and inspirational humans, we welcomed Shelly Pollock, co-author of award winning picture book, Lion Lights. This inspirational book has received four different children’s book awards including the 2023 Children’s Africana Book Award (CABA),  the Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2022, California Eureka Silver Honoree 2022, and the 2022 Blueberry Award! Mrs. Pollock shares the incredible story of Richard Turer, a Kenyan Maasai who grew up trying to protect his family's cattle from the lions. Through hard work and perseverance, he designed and discovered a peaceful solution of flashing lights to scare the lions away without hurting them and protecting the cattle. As Shelly shared her writing journey she was able to encourage grade fives to take action and find sustainable solutions.

Genre-Tasting Café Fun in the AISM Library!

Picture
Our Grade 6 students enjoyed a trip to Book Café this week where they had the opportunity to sample several different “tasting dishes” from a wide range of book genres. Mr. Vernijo and Ms. Terry were dressed up as wait staff and took orders and delivered dishes to the patrons. We are happy to say that many liked what they tried so much they took the items “to-go!”

Sometimes, when a young person says they don’t like to read, it is because they have not had enough exposure to books of different genres (adventure, fantasy, true survival, sports non-fiction, to name a few) and in different formats (audio, print, digital, graphic novels).

By giving students more choice in what they are reading, and by putting outstanding books in their hands, they have a better chance to grow into life-long readers.

Parents Have Access to our eBooks and eMagazines in Sora- Here’s How to Check Them Out

Read Now

We are very excited to now be offering parents access to Sora, which is our ebook platform for students. For those of you who may have Overdrive accounts via other libraries (the adult app for that is Libby), you can simply add our American International School of Mozambique account to that- note that you DO need to spell out the entire school name- you won’t find our school if you type AISM.

Parent access must use these log-in credentials:
  • User ID: the email that you have on file with our school records
  • Pin: aism2023 (you can change your password after the initial login)
Here is a short 4-minute video that takes you through the steps.
As a parent, our magazines (which are for all ages) will probably be the part of Sora you find most interesting. We have a small number of adult reads in Sora and can grow this over time, using your recommendations, too.  Most of the content in Sora is for students as we just added this platform in August of 2021.
Here is the list of all the magazines we have in Sora, so you can check to see if your favorites are among them.
After you look up American International School of Mozambique, be sure to select the second option below that has “parents” at the end of it:

Next, sign into your school account with the credentials below:
  • Your User ID is your parent email.
  • Your PIN is aism2023.

If you need a hand with any of these steps, please pass by and we will gladly assist.
Happy browsing and reading, everyone!
